  This is California’s top oil-producing county, accounting for 10 percent of the total oil production in the United States and 1 percent of crude oil world-wide. Area refineries are also responsible for 65 percent of California’s natural gas, while the growing wind energy industry places Kern among the nation's leaders in development of clean and renewable soures of power.
